How to get to Faial
Faial Airport (HOR) is the central group's main hub. Direct flights from Lisbon and the other Azorean islands, plus the daily Pico-Madalena ferry that turns Faial and Pico into a twin destination.
Direct flights to Faial
| Origin | Airline | Frequency | Flight time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lisbon (LIS) | TAP | 4 to 6 weekly, year-round | 2h30 |
| São Miguel (PDL) | SATA | Daily, sometimes direct, sometimes via TER | 50 min direct, 1h45 via TER |
| Terceira (TER) | SATA | Several daily | 30 min |
| Pico (PIX) | SATA | Occasional, summer only | 10 min (ferry is usually preferable) |
| São Jorge (SJZ) | SATA | 3 to 5 weekly | 15 min |
| Flores, Corvo, Graciosa, Santa Maria | SATA | 1 to 3 weekly | 30 to 90 min |
From North America
No direct service to Faial. The standard routings:
- Via Boston: SATA from BOS to São Miguel (PDL) or Terceira (TER), then inter-island SATA flight to HOR. Total elapsed time from Boston: around 11 hours.
- Via Lisbon: TAP transatlantic to LIS, then TAP to HOR. Total elapsed time from US East Coast: around 14 to 16 hours.
For a multi-island trip including Faial, the cleanest pattern is fly into PDL (the busiest hub), spend a few days on São Miguel, fly the inter-island to HOR, ferry to Pico and back, fly out from HOR or via PDL.
From mainland Europe
Connect through Lisbon. The TAP LIS-HOR route runs 4 to 6 times per week year-round, around 2h30. From the major European hubs (London, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid), total time via LIS is 6 to 8 hours including the connection.
The Pico-Faial ferry
The single most useful piece of central-group infrastructure. Operated by Atlanticoline between Horta (Faial) and Madalena (Pico).
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Route | Horta ↔ Madalena (Pico) |
| Crossing time | 30 minutes |
| Summer frequency | 8 to 10 each way per day |
| Winter frequency | 4 to 6 each way per day |
| Fare (one way) | €4.30 adult, €2.50 child |
| First departure | Around 7:00 from both ends |
| Last departure | Around 22:00 in summer, 19:00 in winter |
| Vehicles | Some sailings accept cars (€20 to €30 extra, book ahead) |
The ferry is a commuter service in summer. Faial and Pico function effectively as a twin destination because of it. Live schedule on atlanticoline.pt.
The yacht angle
Horta is the busiest yacht stopover in the mid-Atlantic. From April to June, transatlantic crews crossing eastbound (Caribbean to Europe) call in to refuel and rest. From October to November, westbound crews (Europe to the Caribbean) call before the long crossing. Booking arrival via the marina office (peterfortyseven.com or +351 292 391 616) is mandatory; visiting yachts pay a modest mooring fee per night.
The marina has 280 berths, a fuel dock, an English-speaking harbourmaster, and the legendary Peter Café Sport for paperwork and cold beer. Crews crossing for the first time should email ahead during peak season.
From the airport to your accommodation
Horta Airport is 5 minutes from the marina by car. Options:
- Rental car at the airport. Ilha Verde, Autatlantis. €25 to €60 per day, reserve ahead in summer. Useful for Capelinhos and the Caldeira; not essential if you base in Horta.
- Taxi. €5 to €10 to Horta marina. Cheap enough to skip the rental car for short stays.
- Hotel transfer. Most hotels offer free pickup; check at booking.
- Bus. Sporadic, mostly school-schedule driven. Not a practical first-day option.
Two-island and three-island patterns
- Faial + Pico: 5 to 7 days total, the classic central-group combination. Fly into HOR or PIX, ferry between, fly out from either. The two islands cover both maritime culture (Faial) and volcanic landscape (Pico).
- Faial + Pico + São Jorge: the central triangle. 8 to 10 days. The Atlanticoline ferry connects all three, but São Jorge sailings are less frequent (1 to 2 daily) and weather-sensitive.
- São Miguel + Faial: the cultural big-island plus the central-group highlight. 7 to 10 days. Two SATA flights (PDL-HOR and back, or PDL-HOR then HOR-PDL).
