How to get to São Miguel
São Miguel has the only Azorean airport with regular long-haul service: João Paulo II (IATA code PDL). Direct flights operate from Boston year-round, from Toronto seasonally, and from a small number of European hubs. From the UK, Ireland, and most of mainland Europe, you connect through Lisbon.
The airlines
Three carriers serve PDL with international routes:
- SATA Azores Airlines, the regional flag carrier, the only operator of direct flights between mainland North America and the Azores. Operates from Boston, Toronto, and seasonal routes to several US East Coast cities (New York, Providence, Oakland). European routes from Lisbon, Porto, Frankfurt, London, and others.
- TAP Portugal, operates multiple daily flights between Lisbon and PDL (around 2h15), and from Porto. Connecting flights from any TAP hub feed into Lisbon for onward travel.
- Ryanair, limited Stansted–PDL route, seasonal, generally cheapest but with the usual Ryanair fee structure on baggage and seat selection.
From the United States
Boston is the easiest gateway. Azores Airlines operates direct flights from Boston Logan (BOS) to Ponta Delgada year-round, typically 4–5 times per week in summer, 2–3 times per week in winter. Flight time is around 5 hours eastbound, 6 hours westbound.
From other US East Coast cities (New York (Newark or JFK), Providence, Washington DC) direct routes operate seasonally (typically May to October). Out of season, expect to route via Boston or via Lisbon.
From the West Coast or the Midwest, there is no realistic direct option. The standard routing is via Boston or Newark. Total elapsed time from Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Chicago is around 12–15 hours including a connection.
Visa requirements: US passport holders can enter Portugal (and therefore the Azores) visa-free under the Schengen agreement for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The ETIAS travel authorization, which has been announced for several years, is expected to become mandatory at some point, check the current status before booking.
From Canada
Toronto Pearson (YYZ) has a direct Azores Airlines route to PDL, operating seasonally (typically May to October), around 5 hours of flight time. Out of season, connections go through Boston or Lisbon, with the via-Boston routing being usually the faster choice for travellers in eastern Canada.
From Montreal, Vancouver, or Calgary, there is no direct service. Expect a connection in Toronto (in season) or via a US East Coast hub.
Visa requirements: Canadian citizens enter Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days. Same ETIAS note as above.
From the UK and Ireland
From London: TAP Portugal operates daily flights via Lisbon (total time around 6 hours including connection). Azores Airlines has limited direct flights from Heathrow seasonally. Ryanair runs a seasonal direct Stansted–PDL route, typically May to October, with the cheapest fares of any UK option.
From Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham: no direct service. Connect through London, Lisbon, or one of the European TAP hubs (Frankfurt, Paris).
From Dublin: TAP Portugal via Lisbon is the standard route, total time around 6 hours. No direct service from Dublin.
Visa requirements: UK and Irish passport holders enter Portugal visa-free. The post-Brexit 90-days-in-180 rule applies for UK passport holders; Irish passport holders remain in the Schengen free-movement zone and are not affected.
From Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa
No direct service from any of these origins. Expect two connections . Typically one in Asia or the Middle East to reach Europe (London, Frankfurt, Paris), then a second to Lisbon, then PDL. Total elapsed travel time from Sydney is around 30 hours.
Routing through Lisbon is more efficient than routing through Boston for South Pacific origins.

Routing strategy
If you want a long weekend
From Boston, you can leave Thursday evening and be on São Miguel Friday morning (with the time-zone shift). 4 days on the ground, return Sunday or Monday. This is the only US origin where a long weekend works without ruining the trip with travel time.
If you want maximum value
Look at Ryanair's STN–PDL route in shoulder season (May, June, September). Round-trip fares are often £100–180 (€115–215) if booked 2–3 months in advance. Add baggage at booking, not at the airport.
If you want to combine with mainland Portugal
Lisbon ↔ Ponta Delgada is so easy and frequent that adding 3–4 days in Lisbon or Porto on either end of your São Miguel trip is the natural choice. TAP offers stopover programmes (free or low-cost Lisbon stop on the Atlantic-crossing routes). Azores Airlines has a similar Açores stopover offer where you can interrupt a Boston–Lisbon ticket with up to 7 nights on São Miguel at no extra fare.
From PDL to your accommodation
João Paulo II airport (PDL) sits about 4 km west of central Ponta Delgada. Options to reach the city or onward to your accommodation:
- Taxi: €10–15 (about £8–13) to central Ponta Delgada, 10 minutes. Available at the rank outside arrivals, no reservation needed.
- Rental car: all major agencies (Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Sixt, plus the local Ilha Verde) have desks in the arrivals hall. Pre-book online for better rates, €25–40 (£21–34) per day in shoulder season, €40–60 (£34–51) in July/August. Manual transmission is standard; specify automatic if needed.
- Public bus (line 16): stops outside the airport, runs to Ponta Delgada town centre. Frequency is around hourly on weekdays, less at weekends, €1.50 (around £1.30). Slow but cheap.
- Pre-arranged transfer: several local operators offer fixed-price transfers from the airport to Furnas, Ribeira Grande, or other accommodations. Expect €40–80 (£34–68) depending on distance.
From São Miguel to the other islands
If you plan to combine São Miguel with another Azorean island, the connections are by air only, there are no ferries from São Miguel. Azores Airlines operates inter-island flights to Terceira (35 min), Faial (45 min), Pico (1h), São Jorge (50 min), Santa Maria (30 min), and Flores/Corvo (with a stop in Faial or Terceira).
Inter-island fares are reasonable, €60–120 (£51–102) one-way in advance, more last-minute. The "Açores Air Pass" gives up to 4 inter-island flights at a reduced rate if booked together with an Azores Airlines long-haul ticket; useful for island-hopping itineraries.
Weather affects the smaller airfields more than PDL. Routes to Pico (PIX), Flores (FLW), and Corvo (CVU) can be cancelled in strong winds. Build a one-day buffer into your return itinerary if you depend on an inter-island connection.
What to expect at PDL
PDL is small, single terminal, around twenty gates, fast immigration. Schengen-area arrivals walk to the exit; non-Schengen arrivals pass through a manned passport control which is typically cleared in 10–20 minutes even at peak times. Baggage delivery is fast.
The airport has limited dining (one café, one restaurant), reasonable wifi, and small currency exchange. ATMs in arrivals dispense euros at standard rates. For longer waits, a small lounge is available for Priority Pass holders.
Booking strategy
Book your transatlantic flight 3–5 months ahead for the best fares. Last-minute fares from Boston in summer often exceed €600–800 (£510–680) round-trip; the advance fare is typically €350–500 (£300–425). Off-season (November–February) sees deep discounts.
Compare prices on Google Flights, Skyscanner, Kiwi, and the airlines' direct websites. The Azores Airlines and TAP direct websites occasionally have promotional fares that do not appear on aggregators. For longer trips, the airline stopover offers (Açores Stopover, TAP Stopover) can effectively give you two destinations for the price of one.
